Founder and director Kate Steele is an accomplished industrial designer with over a decade of experience in lighting product design. She has designed award winning luminaires and exhibited at Milan’s Salone Satellite. After graduating from RMIT in 2009, she spent a number of years working in Melbourne’s vibrant design community before co-founding Artefact Industries.
    In 2022, Kate became the sole director of the company, since re-branded as alt. Artefact, with a renewed focus on supporting local fabrication and sustainable production practices. Her keen interest in designing luminaires comes from the belief that each product goes beyond the realisation of the object itself and, through its function of illumination, becomes a vital element of the space it inhabits.

Having a local supply chain enables us to source and trace materials that meet the high standards required for producing our ethical and sustainable products.
   Our lighting products are consciously designed with serviceability and durability in mind to ensure we are contributing to a sustainable solution and, combined with our product stewardship program, not adding to the landfill waste problem.
